Fillings
A hole in the tooth?
The best holes are those which can be prevented by dental care – of course. If, however, a hole has come to existence, it is inevitable to repair and fill it. Nothing else could prevent the destruction of the tooth from progressing.
What is the adequate filling? What are the costs?
Modern dentistry offers several options from which you can choose. These differ in terms of duration of treatment, aesthetics and durability. Also, the costs differ significantly. We also like to inform you which part of the treatment will be covered by your health insurance and which will not.
There are direct tooth fillings of indirect tooth fillings
Where the first group is directly inserted into the tooth with deformable materials, the indirect fillings are produced outside the mouth and come as so-called inlays or fillings deposit.
- Amalgam
- The more than 100 years used amalgam is inexpensive, easy to handle and durable. Everybody has heard of the controversial debate about amalgam. Official doctrine regards it as safe. However, it is recommended to avoid amalgam under certain conditions (e.g. pregnancy or lactation). Even removing existing amalgam fillings should not be done without further protective measures, since mercury is released while drilling.
- Plastics
- Plastics come in many different designs, both for direct fillings as well as for inlays. Plastic fillings are known for their ability to “huddle” against a damaged tooth in a way that results it a greater stabilization. Above all, plastic can be perfectly adapted to the color of natural teeth – amalgam cannot. However, the effort for a filling made of plastic is very high, because it must be modeled in many individual layers. Special plastics containing some porcelain which makes them particularly suitable for posterior teeth. They are more robust and can endure the enormous pressure that arises while chewing.
- Inlays
- Inlays made of gold alloys, ceramics or plastics are produced in the dental laboratory and fitted afterwards in the practice. A precise cooperation between dentist and dental technicianis required, which makes them more expensive than direct fillings. In comparison inlays have unsurpassed advantages:
- They are very durable, biologically well tolerated, and ceramic inlays offer optimum aesthetics. In this respect, they are in the long term, relatively inexpensive.
