Information about oral hygiene
Caries, gingival inflammation and periodontosis (tooth bed disease) are caused by accumulation of bacterial plaque (plaque). This is especially favored by sugary foods. High concentrations of plaque can be found especially in the area between the teeth and the gums. Most people who follow an optimal oral hygiene routine usually do not have any problems, cavities, gingivitis, or periodontosis.
Tips for dental care:
- Toothbrush
- A good toothbrush should have short, rounded bristles either soft or medium hard. It is recommended to renew toothbrushes after a period of 4-6 weeks to avoid bacterial contamination of the toothbrush. Beside this bent bristles reduce cleaning effectiveness. Optimal care results can be achieved with high-quality electric toothbrushes. For people with limited motoric skills (handicapped persons) electric toothbrushes are the means of choice.
- Interstice tooth brushes
- For the cleaning of tooth spaces, special dental interspace brushes (interdental brushes) are ideal. For persons who suffer from an advanced periodontosis, the application of these brushes is essential. A wide range of interdental brushes is available, differing in sizes and models. They should be applied to clean the tooth spacing from both sides – the cheeks and tongue side.
- In spaces between teeth too narrow for interdental brushes dental floss and tooth picks are particularly suitable as medical tools.
- Oral irrigator
- Oral irrigators support the reduction of the accumulation of bacteria and are of particular importance for persons with periodontosis. It is even more effective to use an oral irrigator with some mouthwash. (If you have used mouthwash, let some water flow through the hoses to clean up.)
- Application time
- Clean your teeth in the morning after breakfast and in the evening before going to sleep for about 3-5 minutes; also, if possible, after every lunch. In between, dental chewing gum ( without sugar!) support your oral hygiene.
- Personal control
- The effectiveness of your cleaning endeavors can be checked by the use of plaque-tinting rinsing. Use these 1-2 times a week before or after brushing teeth. The red colored areas of the teeth (plaque accumulation) identify areas particularly difficult to clean. So you recognize the areas in which the tooth cleaning should be optimized.
